Public Libraries of New Zealand is the peak body for the public library sector. Our annual strategic meeting brings together our members - the managers and leaders within New Zealand's public libraries - and our key partners to plan the future of public libraries. Our existing strategic framework is undergoing an extensive review and refresh, ready for the launch of a new framework in 2017! This year's meeting is the first round of member consultation for the new strategic framework. We will discuss the changing demographics of New Zealand, the economic and social needs of New Zealanders and the place of libraries as vibrant community hubs that enhance communities.

Public Libraries of New Zealand, the Association of Public Library Managers, was established in 2007 as the one voice of public libraries. Our members are the service managers and their leads teams from public libraries across New Zealand. Our current membership includes all but two library services (Mackenzie and Waikato districts). 51 library services (covering 91% of the New Zealand population) returned usage stats for 2014/15, these show:

  • 2,067,885 registered members (+5%)
  • 41.7 million physical loans (-8%)
  • 41 million visits (36% of which were online)
  • 8 million internet sessions (+69%)
  • 5.5 million wifi sessions (+111%)
  • $324 million expenditure
  • 2,066 FTE.
