My library is a place of laughter

Last winter (July 2014) Upper Hutt City Library ran Unscripted, an 8 week improvisation programme. The group enjoyed themselves so much that they continue to meet each week and have just celebrated their first birthday.

Anne saw an article in the in the local paper about this course and decided to give it a go even though she had no idea what she was getting herself into.

“I can’t tell you how much I absolutely loved it.” Anne was brought up to believe you shouldn’t enjoy yourself, because it means you’re a sinner. Anne says before attending Unscripted she didn’t know how to laugh.

“I’ve learnt how to laugh. I’m more relaxed. I was always very careful about what I said, careful not to upset anybody.”

She says it is the best thing that has happened to her. Her husband who has a good sense of humour says she’s getting witty.

As a Lay Minister she visits people and she now feels she has a lot more to talk to them about. “I can bring that to people - have a laugh - I can always pull something out of the box.”

“I wouldn’t miss Unscripted for anything. It’s a place for me to relax. I completely lost myself, lost my persona, this is the real me. It took 72 years to get out.”
