Public Library Statistics

Every year, we collect data from public libraries around the country. These statistics allow for bench-marking and trend analysis within the public library sector and enable advocacy on behalf of one of New Zealand’s most valuable assets: our public library service.

Here’s a snapshot of the 2016 – 17 numbers

Members = 35% of population

Items loaned = 43,458,291

Attendances at events = 1,272,844

Opening hours annually = 577, 668

Library visits up 12% (on the previous year)

Active users increased by 5% (on the previous year)

Number of public libraries = 318

Number of staff employed = 3,000+
