Public Library Statistics

We collect statistics about library usage, users, collections and expenditure from public libraries in New Zealand.

During 2012/13 we reviewed the way we collect statistics. The revised measures will allow us to make comparisons between library services in New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

Our revised statistical tools draw extensively on ISO Standards:

  • AS/NZS ISO 4789 (International library statistics)

  • AS/NZS ISO 4789 Annex A (Measuring the use of electronic library services).

The collected data also allows use of ISO 11620 (Library Performance indicators) to  create a picture of library performance that can be internationally benchmarked. A further set of measures – ISO 16439 (Methods and procedures for assessing the impact of libraries) is expected to be released in 2014.
